One of the most important tasks of municipalities is managing their territory. This task is a daily challenge, because there are many variables: the maintenance of streets, sidewalks, piping, signage, trade, education, housing and factories. Not to mention the constant search for a balance between the quality of life of citizens and a responsibility for the environment.
When LandScope Engineering was commissioned by the Isle of Man Government to accurately map both the TT and Southern 100 routes for the purposes of highway asset inventory and visualisation and to meet future 3D gaming and simulation requirements, a compelling and innovative solution was required.
The underground metro system has a history of more than half a century and has been updated and extended over the years. Daily maintenance and planned upgrades in the complex railway network have increased the need for an asset management system that provides with the necessary control and monitoring.
Until the realisation of the herein presented solution, it was inconceivable to view several thousand kilometres of point cloud and over 1.4 million images using standard computers at a public authority.
